High Blood Pressure SimplifiedJun. 11, 2006

What is High Blood Pressure?

Extreme blood pressure is rise in pressure imposed by moving blood on the present artery walls as a normal response to tension & physical work. But, if this pressure remains constantly high (high blood pressure as it is termed), it can overload your arteries and heart. High blood pressure causes heart attacks and strokes.

How to Evaluate Blood Pressure?

Medical practitioners measure blood pressure in two values, the systolic (the pressure of the blood as it passes the aorta from the heart) and the diastolic (the pressure when the heart ventricles repose betwixt beats). It is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg).

Extreme Blood Pressure is represented in an adult as a blood pressure greater than or same as 140 mm Hg systolic pressure, or higher or equal to 90 mm Hg diastolic pressure. Reading of blood pressure greater than 140/90 is not normal and shows hypertension.
