STAM READY FOR RUUD REUNIONApr. 3, 2006
Jaap Stam believes Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in Manchester United´s line-up to face AC Milan at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed van Nistelrooy is fit enough to play despite being ruled out for three months with an Achilles injury but has refused to say whether the lethal Dutch striker will start the mouth-watering Champions League duel.

But Stam told MUTV: "When you have a player like Ruud, it is only natural that you should try and get him fit for a big game like this. Everyone at our club thinks there is a big chance he is going to play."

LYON TO ROAR ON HOME TURFMar. 30, 2006
Lyon look decent punting material at 7/5 to see off AC Milan in their Champions League quarter-final first leg clash at the Stade Gerland tonight.
OL are arguably the form team in the Champions League this term (unbeaten in eight, shipping just four goals in the process).
They are an experienced, ball-playing side who are difficult to break down and looked superb in crushing PSV Eindhoven a round ago.
The mercurial Juninho misses out (suspended) and while he's a big loss to the French outfit, it's Milan who have bigger problems injury-wise.
The Rossoneri are without defensive stalwarts Jaap Stam, Paulo Maldini and Cafu, and so it's tough to see how they are going to keep Lyon out.
Former Arsenal hitman Sylvain Wiltord is in rude health in front of goal presently, and odds of 9/4 on him scoring in the match looks plenty generous.
Les Gones have never progressed past the quarter-finals in this competition, and with Milan missing three first choice defenders they probably know they must take their chance in this leg.
Andriy Shevchenko and Alberto Gilardino, 6/1 and 15/2 respectively to score first, carry Milan's hopes in attack but the Italian outfit have cultivated their impressive reputation on keeping it tight defensively.
With the aforementioned trio missing, they could struggle and in truth a 1-0 defeat wouldn't be the end of the world for Carlos Ancelotti's troops.
Elsewhere Milan's City rivals Inter are rightful odds-on jolly's to gain the upper hand in their quarter-final against Villarreal.
The Amarillos are without four key players for the encounter in Alessio Tacchinardi, Joseco, Rodolfo Arruabarrena and Josemi.
They have saved their best stuff for Europe this season (as Rangers and Manchester United fans will testify), and any side who can call on the lavish skills of Juan Riquelme always has a chance.
I fancy Inter to edge it, but am not unduly turned on by the 4/7 quotes about a home win, especially after their feeble display against Parma at the weekend.
A better route to profit could be to have a dabble on Julio Cruz to score first at 5/1.
He has been by far and away Inter's most consistent performer this season (10 league and four Champions League goals already), and given the fact that Adriano may not feature he will almost certainly start for the Nerazzurri

Stam to miss first leg in LyonMar. 29, 2006
AC Milan defender Jaap Stam will miss the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal against Olympique Lyon due to a calf strain.

Alessandro Costacurta is likely to replace the Dutchman at right-back, with Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti saying, "If Costacurta is in good shape then I will turn to him."

The second leg is scheduled for next Tuesday, April 5, at the San Siro in Milan.

The winner of the Lyon-Milan quarterfinal will meet either Benfica or Barcelona in the semifinal.

Chelsea ahead of AC Milan for Barcelona's MarquezMar. 17, 2006
Chelsea and AC Milan are interested in Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez.  The 26 year-old Mexico international has less than 18 months on his current deal, which carries a £17 million buyout clause.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho shares the same agent as Marquez, Jorge Mendes, and knows the defender will qualify for a Spanish passport this year.

Mourinho is considering Marquez as cover for Ricardo Carvalho and John Terry, while Milan want the defender as a replacement for Ajax-bound Jaap Stam.

Mendes has been told by Barca officials that new contract talks won't be considered until late April.

Ruud not to play him?Mar. 13, 2006

As befits a proud son of Govan, Sir Alex Ferguson has a tendency to wield the axe with all the subtlety of a Glaswegian kiss.

Remember David Beckham? Ruud van Nistelrooy certainly does, and has had time to ponder the treatment meted out to his former team-mate while taking a watching brief in Manchester United's last three games.

Even Beckham, Roy Keane and Jaap Stam, others ruthlessly discarded by Ferguson, were not dropped for cup finals (Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce were but, in the twilight of distinguished careers, sentimentality would have been a major reason in the selection of either).

Ferguson himself was similarly treated in his playing days and said as much when preferring Louis Saha to his top scorer at the Millennium Stadium.

But as is often the case, the Scot's argument hardly stands up to scrutiny. He stormed out, whereas van Nistelrooy duly took his place on the bench and collected his medal, though remained a study in distancing oneself from the proceedings.

Ferguson had footballing grounds for fielding Saha; his inclusion also acted as reassurance to the Frenchman about his future.

So often the bridesmaid for the biggest games, Saha had finally displaced one of the untouchables in the United attack.

Moreover, as the leading scorer in the Carling Cup, his selection was an act of loyalty from Ferguson. It was vindicated when Saha scored in the 4-0 win over Wigan.

And, quicker and more mobile than van Nistelrooy, he is also genuinely two-footed and possesses a wonderful natural spring.

With seven goals in his last nine starts, he is arguably the form forward at Old Trafford.

He certainly looks a more credible choice as a United player than at any stage since the weeks that followed his transfer from Fulham. And Wayne Rooney, with four goals in his last three games, appears the beneficiary of partnering Saha.

So a simple footballing decision? Hardly. There was a vindictive element in Ferguson's decision to ignore his top scorer and introduce Kieran Richardson, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra as substitutes at Cardiff.

His subsequent omission can be presented as a consequence of the football truism about changing a winning team, but there is an unlikely air of permanence about Van Nistelrooy's station on the bench.

Three successive matches outside the starting 11 is hardly the definition of squad rotation. grounds for demotion, it appears, occurred at Anfield. Cameras picked up Ferguson's displeasure at van Nistelrooy's refusal to chase a lost cause in the FA Cup loss at Liverpool.

But the prime cause of defeat, which was again apparent in the fortunate Premiership victory over Wigan, was United's powder-puff midfield.

Van Nistelrooy emerged from the dugout in a damage limitation exercise at the JJB Stadium.

Further evidence of what United were lacking was, inadvertently, supplied by his team-mates on Sunday. Newcastle were beaten 2-0, a thrashing in all but the scoreline. Saha was chief among the culprits in a display of profligacy.

And, unlike the French forward, van Nistelrooy may be a one-dimensional player, but his gift is the most prized in football.

Indeed, the best out-and-out goalscorer in the Premiership is exactly the sort of player Liverpool and Chelsea, whose European exits were in part a consequence of missed chances, require.

The timing of the ruptured relations at Old Trafford is intriguing; will envious glances be followed by concrete declarations of interest in the sidelined scorer?

Because van Nistelrooy's record is exceptional. He has 148 goals in 210 games since leaving PSV Eindhoven five years ago. For much of that time, he has operated without a strike partner.

He is single-minded enough to prosper as a lone striker; indeed, selfishness is a trait of many great strikers.

Van Nistelrooy, it has long been hinted, would not top any popularity contests at Old Trafford, but his appreciation for Rooney's chipped opener against Newcastle was generous and hardly the actions of a sulking predator.

His current status is a reminder of the capriciousness of football.

It is a matter of months since he figured on the shortlist to replace Roy Keane as captain and only a year since a semi-fit van Nistelrooy was rushed back to face Milan, United's fortunes seemingly dependent upon his return. Nostalgia is evident, too, in most interviews he has given, but he harks back to his first two seasons at Old Trafford.

Gorging himself on Beckham's crossing, he struck 80 times in two years. The Dutchman has never been that prolific since and even the England captain's best man, Gary Neville, makes reference to his departure less than van Nistelrooy; indeed, only the Old Trafford marketing department misses him as much.

With the more erratic Cristiano Ronaldo - not to mention whoever Ferguson perms from Darren Fletcher, Ji-Sung Park and Kieran Richardson - on the flanks, van Nistelrooy's supply line has deteriorated.

His admiration is unconfined, too, for another in exile. Roy Keane's comments have been endorsed by van Nistelrooy, in itself a veiled criticism of his team-mates. It continues the Dutch tradition of independent thought; Ferguson, however, rarely brooks dissent.

Compared to Keane, however, van Nistelrooy hardly represents a challenge to his autocracy. Unlike the ageing Irishman, his is a strong case for selection.

It is telling that Saha, despite his Carling Cup goals, has only struck three times in the Premiership; odds on a recall for United's top scorer against West Brom should be shortening.

His continued omission, however, is evidence that age has not withered Ferguson's fondness for a battle. To the bemusement of everyone else, he has picked a fight with van Nistelrooy.

The precedents, as Beckham, Stam and Paul Ince can testify, involve a high-profile sale, and not a change of management. This relationship may not be irretrievable, but the trial separation has revealed cracks.

And given the premium football rightly attaches to goalscorers - not to mention the wealthy clubs targeting a striker of van Nistelrooy's calibre - Ferguson may need his benched forward more than the Dutchman needs Manchester United now.

MILAN, BAYERN MUNICHMar. 9, 2006
Milan progressed to the last eight of the Champions League following an empathic 4-1 win over Bayern Munich, with Filippo Inzaghi scoring twice while Andriy Shevchenko and Ricky Kakà added the other two. Carlo Ancelotti made seven changes from the side that defeated Empoli 3-0 in the Serie A game at the weekend, with Nelson Dida back between the posts, Jaap Stam and Serginho occupying the full-back roles while Alessandro Nesta returned to partner Kakha Kaladze in the centre of defence. Johann Vogel came in for the suspended Rino Gattuso to make up a midfield trio of Andrea Pirlo and Clarence Seedorf, leaving Ricky Kakà to offer support to the experienced attacking duo of Shevchenko and Inzaghi.

With so much at stake, it was no surprise that the early stages were cagey, with play compacted in midfield as both defences pushed up although Shevchenko and Kakà combined swiftly to release Serginho down the left flank and only a deflection stopped a pinpoint cross reaching Inzaghi inside the area. However, Serginho was soon given another opportunity and made no mistake when Martin Demichelis gave the ball away and the Brazilian's curling cross enabled Inzaghi to cushion a header into the corner of the net. Vogel then hit a firm shot just wide of the upright after Seedorf's corner was only half-cleared. An amazing two-minute period on 25 minutes started with Shevchenko missing a penalty after Inzaghi was fouled in the area by Ismael, but just sixty seconds later the Ukrainian made up for putting his spot-kick wide when he got in front of the defence to head home Stam's cross from the right. Bayern were given a way back into the tie on 35 minutes when Dida failed to hold Bastian Schweinsteiger's low free-kick from 25 metres and Isamel swept the loose ball into the net. Dida then turned hero just before the break, with a wonderful reflect save to keep out Ballack's goalbound header.

The second half got off to the best possible start for the Rossoneri when after just two minutes another tempting Serginho cross bounced-up and off Bixente Lizarazu into Inzaghi's path and the striker had the simple task of heading in from close range. A smart Dida save soon after from Claudio Pizarro's header ensured Milan maintained their two-goal advantage. Another defensive mix-up in the German defence allowed Shevchenko to pick out Seedorf inside the area but under pressure the Dutchman screwed his shot just wide. Kakà put the game beyond doubt on 59 minutes, with a swift break from the half-way line before dispatching a thunderous shot into the roof of the net past sprawling goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. There was an air of desperation in the Bundesliga champion's play after that, with pass-after-pass going astray and when they did create a chance Dida was there to make a save. Inzaghi made way for Alberto Gilardino for the last fifteen minutes and was soon followed by Shevchenko, with Ambrosini returning to action for his second appearance in the competition this season. Milan were coasting through the final stages but Seedorf still found time to leave the defence trailing in his wake but Kahn did well to parry the final drive.

PALERMO, MILANFeb. 27, 2006
Milan continued their excellent form of late, with a 2-0 win at Palermo where Andriy Shevchenko slotted away a penalty to add to Inzaghi’s opener to keep the Rossoneri in second place in the table. Coach Carlo Ancelotti made a number of changes following the midweek Champions League draw at Bayern Munich. The injured Nelson Dida was replaced by Zeljko Kalac between the posts. The centre of the Milan defence once again had a new partnership as Alessandro Costacurta came in to play alongside Alessandro Nesta. Jaap Stam continued at right-back, with Serginho at left-back. Johann Vogel came in for Clarence Seedorf midfield alongside Andrea Pirlo and Rino Gattuso, leaving Kakà to offer support to the front-two of Andriy Shevchenko and Filippo Inzaghi.

The early stages of the match were played out exclusively in midfield, but it was Inzaghi who first tested goalkeeper Mariano Andujar on ten minutes with a header from Gattuso’s cross. The striker then dragged a first-time volley wide of the upright as Milan started to dominate proceedings although Stam had to react quickly to dispossess Andrea Caracciolo inside the area. The Dutchman did find time to join the attack and had Andujar diving to tip away a stinging drive. Shevchenko must have thought he had given Milan the lead on 30 minutes but just as the striker was about to blast the ball into an empty net, Cristian Zaccardo somehow managed to block from almost on the line. Just before the break, only Kalac’s lightening reflexes kept out David Di Michele who had been left free one-on-one against the Australian keeper.

Milan had the home side under pressure from the restart and Shevchenko hit a free-kick over the bar and then pulled a low effort wide from a promising position after a neat interchange between Kakà and Stam. Kakà again showed his sublime skill in a tight situation, with a back-heel that almost released Inzaghi free on goal. The young Brazilian then won a free-kick on the edge of the area but Pirlo’s deadball effort hit the wall. The breakthrough finally came on 72 minutes when Vogel’s cross from the left was met by Inzaghi’s precise header which looped over the stranded Andujar. Seedorf then came on for the injured Gattuso and Marek Jankulovski was soon introduced in place of Pirlo, with Vogel moving into the centre of midfield. Shevchenko made the game safe seven minutes from time from the penalty spot after the Ukrainian’s quick break through the home defence was ended by Andujar’s foul. Milan were reduced to ten men when Stam received his second yellow card for a late challenge.

Milan make Zebina moveFeb. 21, 2006

AC Milan are reportedly set to land Juventus defender Jonathan Zebina in a swap deal involving midfielder Massimo Ambrosini.

Zebina has had problems with the Juve hierarchy this season after his request for a pay rise was turned down and he is likely to leave the club in the summer.

Milan are on the lookout for defenders and with Cafu and Jaap Stam ending their stints at the San Siro in the summer, a move for Zebina is on the cards.

Reports suggest that the Bianconeri would allow Zebina to join their nearest title challengers, but only in exchange for Ambrosini, who has fallen out of favour at the San Siro.

Juve are looking to strengthen their midfield options and have been strongly linked with Palermo's Simone Barone.

Milan, CagliariFeb. 20, 2006

An Alberto Gilardino penalty proved enough to dispose of Cagliari, as Milan go clear in second place.

The Rossoneri are on a roll and came into this game having scored nine goals in their previous two encounters with Treviso and Reggina. Cagliari's away form was far from reassuring, having lost 11 of their 13 ties and conceded a whopping 31 goals.

Andriy Shevchenko returned to the squad, albeit on the bench, but flu-ridden Andrea Pirlo and the injured Marcos Cafu, Paolo Maldini and Massimo Ambrosini remained sidelined. Antonio Langella was suspended for the Sardinians, so they switched to a 4-4-2 system. Kakha Kaladze was in the starting 11 the day after the body of his younger brother Levan, who was kidnapped in 2001, was identified.

Gennaro Gattuso required a well-timed tackle to stop David Suazo's counter-attack, while Serginho's sweeping cross from the left was nodded wide of the near post by Pippo Inzaghi.

Inzaghi is on fine form at the moment and caused panic in the area when he squeezed through three Cagliari defenders and was sandwiched for what the referee considered to be a foul. Alberto Gilardino rolled in the penalty for his 15th goal of the season to give Milan the lead.

There was another blow for Cagliari, who lost Nelson Abeijon to an injury after just 27 minutes and introduced Milan youth product Budel.

Antonio Chimenti tipped a Serginho free kick out from under the crossbar and from the resulting corner Jaap Stam volleyed over the target.

Chimenti was tested with a fantastic one-handed save on what would've been a magnificent Kaka curling yet powerful snapshot from the edge of the box.

A deflected Johan Vogel effort looped just over the bar, but Kaka's chipped pass sent Inzaghi alone on goal only to be halted for an incorrect offside decision. Nonetheless, the striker had ballooned his finish over.

Stam seems to have finally put his injury worries behind him, as he sprinted past three defenders before earning a corner kick on the stroke of half-time.

Stam picked up a knock in the first half and made way for Dario Simic. Suazo's low free kick was wide of the target and Serginho fell under Bega's challenge just outside the area and the referee waved play on.

Daniele Conti's free kick took a slight deflection off Gattuso to turn it off target. Milan were struggling to break down an organised Cagliari side and Manuel Rui Costa replaced Gilardino, switching to the Christmas Tree formation.

Chimenti dropped a deflected Serginho cross and Inzaghi and Rui Costa were almost able to take full advantage of this howler.

A fine team move eventually fell to Kaka, but he couldn't get power behind the finish from six yards on Gattuso's floated pass.

Cagliari remained dangerous on the counter-attack and it took a decisive Serginho tackle to prevent Mauro Esposito sweeping in Suazo's cut-back nine minutes from time.

Clarence Seedorf looked set to close up the game in Milan's favour with an impressive run and combination with Kaka, but Chimenti stuck out a foot to parry his precise angled drive.

Substitute Marek Jankulovski's cross couldn't get a final touch in off Rui Costa or Inzaghi in stoppages.

Milan: Dida; Stam (Simic 46), Nesta, Kaladze, Serginho; Gattuso, Vogel, Seedorf; Kaka (Jankulovski 85); Inzaghi, Gilardino (Rui Costa 72)

Cagliari: Chimenti; Ferri, Bega, Canini, Agostini (Cossu 86); Conticchio (Capone 68), Abeijon (Budel 27), Conti, Gobbi; Esposito, Suazo

Jaap Stam to join Ajax on two-year deal in JulyFeb. 10, 2006

Ajax are struggling in the current season, but the squad for next season is starting to take shape. Tonight the Amsterdam club reached an agreement with AC Milan on the transfer of Jaap Stam to the ArenA. The Dutch veteran defender (33) will officially become an Ajacied on 01 July 2006 and will sign a contract for two years.

The transfer comes as a surprise. It was common knowledge that Stam had the intention to return to The Netherlands in the summer, but he was almost exclusively linked with PSV, one of the clubs he previously played for. The Eindhoven outfit were reportedly interested in landing Stam as the successor of Brazilian star Alex, who will almost certainly leave Eindhoven at season's end. It seems like Ajax have outsmarted their Eindhoven rivals.

Jaap Stam (born Kampen, 17 July 1972) started playing football for DOS Kampen, the local amateur club in his town of birth, near Zwolle. He was courted by FC Zwolle, the area's First Division club, and made his début as a pro for them in the summer of 1992. After only one season Stam made the jump to the Eredivisie, not with Zwolle, but with Cambuur Leeuwarden, where he spent two seasons, one in the Eredivisie and (after relegation in 1994) one in the First Division.

In 1995 Stam's career seriously took off. He joined Eredivisie side Willem II, but spent only half a season there before moving on to PSV in early 1996. In Eindhoven he developed into a top drawer defender so quickly that, when Manchester United bought him in the summer of 1998, he was the most expensive defender ever in European football: United paid 35 million Dutch guilders for him (some 16 million euros). At that point he had 193 league appearances in Holland behind his name, in which he netted 17 goals. With PSV he had won the Dutch Cup of 1996 and the Eredivisie championship of 1997.

Stam spent just over three seasons at Old Trafford, where he became an absolute superstar and won three English championships as well as the Champions League in 1999. Nevertheless, his career for Man-U ended in bitter fashion: Stam had to leave the club through the back door after the publication of his authorized biography, Head To Head, in which the club's respected boss, Sir Alex Ferguson, was heavily criticized and embarrassed. After 80 league fixtures for United (1 goal) Stam moved to the Serie A. Lazio Roma was his new club.

He spent three seasons at the Italian capital (70 Serie A matches, 3 goals) before he was landed by AC Milan, for which club he saw action in only 17 league games in his first season. This year is better: he doubled his number of Serie A matches in the first half of the season alone. He netted once for the Rossoneri. For many years Stam also was a starter for Oranje. His number of caps for The Netherlands is 67 (3 goals). The defender decided to quit his Holland career after Euro 2004, as he wanted to spend more time with his family and focus completely on AC Milan.

Ajax have landed a physically strong, merciless defender with 377 league games in The Netherlands, England and Italy behind his name, plus 67 matches for Holland. The Amsterdam club seem to have found the great leader they were looking for. In the words of technical director Martin van Geel: "Jaap Stam is a very experienced defender, who has played for many great clubs. We feel he can be of enormous value for our young team."

Five months and one day to go before Jaap Stam will be an Ajacied! (MP)
