| Champions League debutants Villarreal hope to turn the tables on Inter Milan with a catenaccio-style performance when they host the Serie A side in their quarter-final, second leg on Tuesday.
Inter were the pioneers of door-bolt defending back in the 1960s when they excelled at grinding out 1-0 wins, but it is Villarreal who are more likely to adopt such tactics as they attempt to overturn a 2-1 deficit from last week's first leg. A 1-0 win will be enough to put the Spaniards through to the semi-finals in their debut season in the continent's elite club competition. In a dress rehearsal for the Inter match they sneaked a 1-0 victory away to a dominant Real Zaragoza on Saturday with their customary mixture of defensive effectiveness and maximum efficiency in front of goal. Villarreal were on the ropes for much of the game, but came away from Zaragoza with their first win in five league matches thanks to a sweetly struck free kick from midfielder Roger on the stroke of halftime, the team's first shot on goal. "It was an efficient performance," said coach Manuel Pellegrini. "But football is all about goals and we scored one and hit the post later on. "Perhaps it was too big a prize for us given how little we got near their goal in the first half, but we played well in the second and didn't give Zaragoza any room to move." Villarreal have only lost one of 17 European home games and have kept clean sheets in 13, but their victories in the Champions League have always been by the smallest margin. In attack they will be looking to Uruguay striker Diego Forlan and playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme to tease open the Inter defence, with the help of either former AC Milan forward Jose Mari or Mexico centre-forward Guillermo Franco. Their back four will need to be at their very best if they are to shackle Inter's pacy front line and the driving runs of defender Javier Zanetti who was man-of-the-match in the first leg. FIGO WAIT The Italians, who crushed Villarreal's regional rivals Valencia 5-1 on their last visit to Spain in the Champions League, fielded just one player from the starting XI against Villarreal in Saturday's 3-0 win over Messina. Coach Roberto Mancini has to wait for news on Portuguese winger Luis Figo who spent Saturday training alone at the club's Appiano Gentile complex. Last week Mancini used Brazilian Cesar on the left and Serbian Dejan Stankovic in Figo's slot on the right flank but Argentine Santiago Solari made his claim for a place with two goals against Messina. Inter had little trouble against Messina with all three of their goals coming in the first 26 minutes and Mancini says he wants to see the same positive attitude in Spain. "We will have to play like we did on Saturday. We know it will be a tough match but we will have to play to win. The main thing is to qualify, but we will go to Spain to impose our game," said the Inter coach. Solari says he is well aware of the challenge facing Inter. "They are a very Spanish side -- they like to keep possession and they make the most of their quite small pitch. It will be a very tough game for us," he said.

| Javier Zanetti gave a vintage performance in Inter's 2-1 Champions League win over Villarreal. "We started off very badly by letting in a goal in the first minute, we probably made a positioning mistake. Then we showed our character and we played very well. We absolutely deserved this victory," he said. On the performance of Adriano against Villarreal and next Tuesday's return leg at the Estadio El Madrigal, the Inter captain said: "He played a great game just like the whole team. We have to prepare for a very tough return match. We will have to play our game in Spain without thinking about the small advantage this result gives us." | ||

| "It will be important to play a good team game against Villarreal. They're a difficult side to face and they have a lot of good players. They play very good football, so we will see what happens but we know that the best Inter is needed to win." Speaking at the pre-match UEFA news conference, Javier Zanetti underlined: "Inter, as always, will try to impose their game. This is our characteristic. My position on the pitch? There are no problems. The coach can always count on me one hundred percent." Looking back to the Serie A defeat at Parma, the Inter captain continued: "That match left us very bitter inside because the team didn't deserve to lose. Unfortunately, after going behind we didn't manage to score despite the many chances created. But this is football and you also have to accept these defeats." Zanetti also spoke about the form of his team-mate Adriano. "He has never been missing the affection of the team and the fans," he said. "It's a strange period for him, but all a striker needs to do to break free is score a goal. Adri just has to do his best to get through this situation, he will soon return to being important for Inter." | ||

| Inter Milan's Portuguese winger Luis Figo is doubtful for Wednesday's (Thursday morning AEDT) Champions League quarter-final, first leg against Spain's Villarreal. Figo was unable to train with the team last week due to a muscle problem and he missed Inter's 1-0 defeat at Parma on Saturday (Sunday morning AEDT). On Sunday, the former Real Madrid player managed only a light individual training session at the club's Appiano Gentile training centre and his involvement in Wednesday's (Thursday morning AEDT) game is in doubt. Inter coach Roberto Mancini could ask Serbian midfielder Dejan Stankovic to fill in on the right wing or push Argentine captain Javier Zanetti into a more advanced role. | ||

| "In the first leg Ajax created problems for us in the first half despite the fact that we knew they were a young and quality team. But Inter had a different approach in the second half and managed to straighten out a very important match. Tomorrow we will have to try and correct the mistakes made in Holland," said Javier Zanetti in Monday's pre-Inter v Ajax news conference. The Inter captain continued: "We have never underestimated Ajax. We know Dutch football and we knew it was going to be a difficult match. To draw 2-2 at the Amsterdam ArenA after being two goals down is very significant. We want to go as far as we can in the Champions League, but we're not overlooking the championship or the Tim Cup, either. Now we must focus entirely on tomorrow evening's match without thinking about the quarter-final draw which has already taken place. To face Villareal we have to beat Ajax first. To underestimate tomorrow's match would be a mistake." Looking back to Saturday's Serie A home win against Sampdoria, Zanetti added: "It wasn't an easy match because they're a team who can always create problems because of the class of their players and because they are coached by a good coach. Inter suffered a bit in the first half then dominated after Adriano's goal and deserved to bring home the three points." How important was Adriano's return to scoring? "We were very pleased about his goal," Zanetti replied. "For him it was fundamental to start scoring again. The last two weeks of training without matches in between have done him a lot of good. Adri is improving, he can be an important weapon for the team. Let's hope he doesn't stop scoring now." At the Meazza tomorrow Inter will have a crowd for the first time in Europe this season after the four-match ban imposed by UEFA for the throwing of flares in last season's quarter-final Euroderby. "Having a crowd for a match like tomorrow's is very important," Zanetti admitted. "They can help us beat Ajax and get through the round." | ||

Internazionale striker Adriano has recovered his confidence but the big question on the minds of the Nerazzurri fans is whether he can deliver when it really matters against Ajax. Adriano will have an opportunity to answer the sceptics when the Dutch giants travel to the San Siro to decide who will be the final team through to the last eight of the Champions League on Tuesday night. Crucial away goals from Dejan Stankovic and Julio Cruz in the first leg allowed Inter to come back for a 2-2 draw and the two teams have had to wait an extra week for the return clash as AC Milan, who share the San Siro, were also drawn to play at home in the second leg. Inter will be looking to follow in the footsteps of their city rivals, who progressed after beating Bayern Munich 4-1 last week, and Serie A leaders Juventus to make it three Italian teams in the last eight. The Nerazzurri go into the game in high spirits after beating Sampdoria at the weekend, with Adriano claiming the game's only goal with his first strike since January 15. "I feel much better," said the Brazilian star. "I hope that I can return to score those goals that are so important for my team to improve this season." Inter owner Massimo Moratti has certainly seen a big improvement from the 24-year-old and believes he is getting back to his most dangerous form. "Adriano has trained well and has improved a lot," he said. "On Saturday, our opponents feared him and he has proved to be the striker that we all know." An increased output from Adriano will probably be too late to revive Inter's title hopes - they lie 12 points adrift of Juve - but he could still inspire Inter to Champions League glory. Ajax have been even more inconsistent domestically and are 20 points off the pace so the competition has taken on an added significance for both teams, especially with Champions League debutants Villarreal lying in wait for the winners. "This is a very important game for us," said Inter coach Roberto Mancini. "It's going to be an open contest," he added. "We will have to suffer a lot in order to progress." Inter defender Ivan Cordoba must serve a one-match ban so Marco Matterazzi will come into the centre of defence. Javier Zanetti is expected to return in place of Nicolas Burdisso at right-back, while Pierre Wome should keep his place on the left after an impressive performance against Samp. Mancini also welcomes Juan Sebastian Veron back after missing the first leg through injury and Ajax midfielder Mauro Rosales, a goalscorer in Amsterdam, knows his fellow Argentinian will bring something extra to the hosts. "Inter with Veron is a much better Inter, but I still think we have a chance," he said. "Inter have an experienced team and you could see that in the home game. "In the first half they were off their game, but in the second they stretched the game to the flanks and from then the game was in their hands." Ajax held Dutch leaders PSV Eindhoven to a goalless on Saturday, giving Rosales reason for optimism. "We must start the first half like we did against Inter and the second like we did against PSV," he added. "When we play we can play good attacking football, and in Milan, we must trust in that."

| Javier Zanetti was interviewed by Sky Italia before this afternoon's training session at Angelo Moratti Sports Centre. Here's what the Inter captain had to say: Your comments on the moment Inter are going through? Is it right to think that the two defeats to Fiorentina and Juventus have broken a few mechanisms? "I don't think anything has been broken. Unfortunately we lost two matches we didn't deserve to lose. We haven't collected many points from our last matches but the team has showed in all these matches that it is capable of continuing with strength and has the courage to put things right. This is football and we have to realise this." It has been reported that there has been a split in the Inter squad. Is this true? "Every time things aren't going well they say the squad has been split and that we don't get on with one another. I can guarantee that this is not true. We're training serenely and with all our strength to try and win every match. The moment we are going through is only delicate because of the results. If you look at Sunday's match against Roma, Inter played better, apart from the first twenty minutes." Are you a bit disappointed with how things are going in the championship? "We're certainly a bit disappointed because we would prefer to be further up in the table. But we mustn't feel sorry for ourselves. We must try and make the best finish to the championship and get as many points as we can from now until the end." What have Inter lacked in this year's championship? "We started well. Unfortunately we dropped points in the week when we faced Roma, Sampdoria and Lazio in the first half of the season. Perhaps we deserved a bit more, but the results didn't come." You are one of the most present players in Inter's history. Would you be pleased if the club withdrew your number four shirt when you end your career? "These things are always pleasing. I have always said that I feel at home at Inter. This is why I have stayed here for many years and I want to finish my career at Inter." Would you like to be an Inter executive when you end your playing career? "I still haven't asked myself this. If the club wants me to stay and work here, I would willingly stay." They say that Juan Sebastian Veron might stay on again next season. The club is trying to convince him to stay. Have you also tried to? "These are personal choices that must be respected. We all know how important Veron is for Inter, both on and off the pitch. We hope he stays." There's talk of Ballack arriving if Veron doesn't stay... "Ballack is a fantastic player, but I think that Veron has shown and is showing all his value at Inter." How much is said in the Inter dressing room about a possible return of Ronaldo? "We haven't spoken about it. There are rumours of new arrivals every time things aren't going well. We will see how the season finishes then the club will assess the situation and make its decisions." You have played with Ronaldo. Would you be pleased to have him back? "We're talking about a great champion, but it's still too soon to say." Did you see how Juventus qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals? "I honestly didn't see the match, but I have seen the highlights and it was certainly tough-going for them. They believed until the end and were rewarded." Are Barcelona the best team around at the moment? "They're a fantastic team who are playing excellent football, and they are one of the favourites to win the Champions League final." Are you worried that there might be another Italian Champions League derby? "Anything could happen. But the most important thing for us is to win our tie with Ajax first and get through the round." Adriano hasn't scored for a while. Is this a problem? "Adri knows it's a difficult moment. He's doing his best in training to help us win every match he plays in. We all have to give that bit extra at the moment, and we are all willing to." | ||

| "We were back to winning ways today and we all wanted these three points," admitted Javier Zanetti on Inter Channel following the Nerazzurri's 3-1 win at home to Udinese. "We can't make any more mistakes and we must do our best until the end. Personally I feel very good, but the important thing is to be useful to the team. I won't go away with my national team, so I will have the chance to work with my team-mates for a whole week and make the best preparations for this final phase of the season." Commenting on Walter Samuel's sending-off, Zanetti added: "It was an excessive sending-off. At the most, it was a yellow-card foul. Last week there was that bad episode involving Totti and we're very sorry about this. Now everyone wants to penalise challenges from behind. This is right but they need to be assessed well." | ||

Inter Milan captain Javier Zanetti sayPizarro has been linked with Fiorentina, but Zanetti insists: "I often speak with David - clearly nobody likes to be outside the team, but he always has behaved in an extremely professional way. "Unfortunately in his role there are two big players like Cambiasso and Veron, but Veron wants to return to Argentina at the end of the season. "If that happens, Pizarro will have many more possibilities to play and to demonstrate his value: the future of Inter is him." s teammate David Pizarro has a long future at the San Siro.
