As I blogged about recently, I'm not a big fan of volunteer vacations, because I find that most provide very little value to locals. That said, there are short-term opportunities abroad that do make a difference.

One of them is World Computer Exchange (WCE). Volunteers travel in teams of seven and assist local WCE partner organizations that have received WCE computers. Volunteers assist with troubleshooting, training and technical support. To be eligible, volunteers must be 21 years of age, have some prior tech skills, and a willingness to participate in technology-related tasks and education. For certain trips there are some language requirements. Trip participants also visit local families and enjoy a variety of opportunities to experience the local culture. Also, accepted volunteers must pay the costs for their trip (flight, etc.). There are upcoming trips to :
If you are already traveling to a developing country, you can do outreach or volunteer work on WCE's behalf. There is no charge for such participation, however, you must contact WCE first and get oriented and pre-approval before working on WCE's behalf.

Are you a Peace Corps volunteer current on assignment in a developing country who has connections with local initiatives that could benefit from WCE? If so, contact WCE about possibly partnering.

My further thoughts and resources regarding volunteering abroad.
