To keep up with commemorative days, weeks, years and decades officially designated by the United Nations General Assembly, see either this part of the UNESCO web site or this page by the UN Association of Canada. UN days, weeks, years and decades provide mission-based organizations (nonprofits, NGOs, civil society, etc.) with excellent "tie-in" opportunities: events, press releases, op-ed pieces in your local paper, new pages on your web site, etc. So far, 2006 has just one designation: International Year of Deserts and Desertification (more designations for one year are possible).
