TechSoup / CompuMentor has started a Recycled Computer Initiative (RCI) pilot program. It gives nonprofits nationwide a chance to purchase high-quality refurbished computers "at the lowest possible cost," and offers companies an environmentally friendly alternative to used-equipment disposal. However, please note that no technical support for these computers is provided ("you must have enough technical experience to set up your own computers and connect them to existing networks"). Also, monitors are unavailable. "After analyzing shipping costs for monitors and new monitor prices, we found that we were unable to offer refurbished monitors at a low enough cost to be a true value to our customers." Sadly, the computers are available only with Microsoft operating systems.
