The original spirit of the Internet was to freely give information, as well as to take it. It was a system built with the primary intention of collaboration, communication and accessibility -- not exclusivity and profits. With that original spirit in mind, I'm sharing information on what I read and where I go online; consider doing the same in your own blog or newsletter. Online newsletters and online communities constitute the majority of my ongoing professional development, more than onsite conferences or paper publications (though, ofcourse, I still utilize those). I make time every week or month to read the newsletters and web sites listed on these pages, and never feel that my time is wasted:
  • Online Newsletters I Read Regularly
I am very picky about subscribing to email and web-based newsletters. My time is extremely limited, like everyone who works in the non-profit sector; I don't have time to read every organization's newsletter. I also want to spend my reading time with newsletters that are the most immediately valuable to my work.

  • Internet Communities/Discussion Groups In Which I Participate
Online discussion groups and online networks are fantastic places to talk with others interested in the same things in which you are interested, to share and find resources, or to just lurk and learn about a particular subject. These groups provide places to get suggestions and feedback, ask questions, test ideas, or just observe conversations by others. In addition, participating in online discussion groups can be essential to your professional development, no matter what your job responsibilities. In addition to my offline work, it has been my involvement with online groups that have lead to the development of many of the tip sheets on this Web site, and to most of my employment over the last 15 years. I am also posting this list to encourage you to look for online discussion groups for professional issues related to your work or interests, to find help you need, create new collaborations and share your own expertise with others.
