How can computer, Internet and network technologies be used by the staff and supporters of mission-based organizations - nonprofits, non-governmental organizations/NGOs, civil society, public sector agencies, schools - to benefit individuals, communities and the environment? What tech tools, resources, systems and practices are proving most valuable to these organizations, including their volunteers?

Back in 2001, just before I moved to Germany, I launched the Tech4Impact monthly newsletter, to regularly answer some of these questions, and to note additions and changes to my web site, via which I've been trying to help nonprofits with computer and networking tech since 1996. Tech4Impact, like my web site, is less about techno-jargon and more about the human factors in using computer and Internet technology to benefit people, communities and the environment.

I considered getting rid of Tech4Impact recently, thinking most people now prefer to subscribe to blogs rather than email newsletters, but Tech4Impact subscribers were adamant: most still prefer email to RSS readers. It was yet another reminder that, despite what you hear on tech-savvy TV shows and tech-savvy blogs, email is still the preferred Internet software for most people.
