Among the many online publications I read regularly is the blog Horse Pig Cow by Tara Hunt, an online marketing professional who has "never believed in mass anything, because people are individuals and not ‘targets’." Recently, she described what makes a great social media consultant, and it's worth your read if you want to use online communities to market a product, a service, an event, an organization, an idea, whatever. Note that she talks very little about mastering the technology and much more about connecting with people on an honest, human level -- something nonprofit organizations should know how to do better than anyone.
