Last night, Tina Fey said, "If you ever start to feel too good about yourself, they have this thing called the Internet! You can find a lot of people there who don't like you!"

Amen, sister.

One of the downsides of being just somewhat well-known in a few limited online circles, and having opinions, is that you will eventually get your very own haters -- people who seem to live only to rebut every point you make online. They will leave no turn un-stoned. If you say that the sky is blue, your haters will smugly respond that it's clearly plaid and that you're an idiot for not being able to see it. Your tone, your content, your questions, your compliment to another online community member, even your signature file, will all be up for criticism. A few years ago, one of my regular haters said it was my fault that he continually misspelled my name ("Jane", instead of "Jayne"); he said it was because of my frequently-used online handle, jcravens, was "confusing." Still trying to figure that one out...

I guess I should be flattered that I'm "important" enough to have haters, and usually, I can brush them off, but the reality is that, eventually, haters do get to me. As 2009 begins, a couple have been quite busy already. There's nothing like having a great day ruined by a well-placed online dig. Which, ofcourse, if they are reading this, is going to make their day...

With all this in mind, it was with a great amount of amusement and comfort that I watched Tina Fey's Golden Globes acceptance speech. If someone as wonderful and talented as Tina Fey can have haters, I guess I'm in good company.

Oh well. At least random ego-surfing produces some unexpected ego boosts sometimes as well.
