Portland State University’s Institute for Nonprofit Management and Department of Extended Studies now offer an online Volunteer Engagement and Leadership Program (VELP) to educate professionals and others on "how to successfully engage and lead volunteers." This program was formerly housed at Washington State University.
Even if you don't have the title of "volunteer manager" or "volunteer coordinator" at an organization, no matter what your role at a nonprofit organizations, and no matter what your career aspirations at nonprofit organizations might be, volunteer management courses are well worth your time. There are tried-and-true best practices out there regarding involving and supporting volunteers, and these courses will put you in touch with the plethora of information out there. No matter what your organizations focus -- animals, the environment, children at-risk, seniors, the unemployed, the homeless, the arts, unemployed homeless artists, whatever -- you will find formal volunteer management courses VERY helpful, and applicable to a variety of organizations.
