International Women's Day, March 8, is a worldwide day to recognize women for their achievements, and to discuss the challenges women and girls face in achieving full access to education, economic and social opportunities. It should not, however, be the only day we recognize women and look for ways for women to be empowered. The theme for 2010 is "Equal rights, equal opportunities: Progress for all."

I'm blogging about the day now because I want you -- you as an individual or as a representative of an organization -- to think now about how you are going to observe International Women's Day on March 8. Via your email newsletter, your blog or your status on an online social networking site, you could:
  • Talk about how your organization helps or has helped women or girls to access to education, economic and social opportunities and safety, or to highlight the challenges faced by women and girls because of how society views their place in society.

  • Talk about what you do in your own work or volunteering to help women or girls to access to education, economic and social opportunities and safety, or to highlight the challenges faced by women and girls because of how society views their place in society.

  • Highlight programs or organizations you think are are contributing to the improvement of health, education and economic opportunities for women.

  • Highlight the education, economic and career successes of women in your own family or among your colleagues.

  • Point to your favorite online resources regarding empowering women.

  • Say why you think this day is important.
