USAID is the principal USA agency providing US government assistance to countries recovering from disaster, trying to escape poverty, and engaging in democratic reforms. USAID is an independent federal government agency that receives overall foreign policy guidance from the Secretary of State.

Say what you will about the US government, you can't deny that its foreign assistance agency shares a HUGE amount of information online. If you work internationally, or if you want to work internationally, you need to be looking at USAID's resources.

I've blogged before about a USAID program recently (ACVFA) that I'm a big fan of. There's also USAID's Development Experience Clearinghouse, which documents USAID's technical and program activities (it's where you can access all the reports and guidelines that USAID staff and consultants write regarding their work overseas).

Now, there's another way to get involved with USAID, via their three day Global Pulse 2010, March 29 – 31, 2010. The goal is to bring together individual socially-engaged participants and organizations from around the world. The feedback generated during the event will inform U.S. foreign assistance and diplomatic strategies on major themes and ideas.

Participants can choose to participate in a variety of discussions:
  • Inspiring a New Generation - Developing Global Citizens of the 21st Century

  • Empowering Women and Girls - Making equality a reality Enabling the Essential Education- What everyone should learn to succeed in the 21st century

  • Building Stronger Partnerships - Explore new ways to promote partnerships between societies, citizens, community organizations, and businesses as a means of creating sustainable solutions to shared development priorities

  • Exercising Political and Civil Rights - Understanding rights, increasing citizens participation and expanding accountability

  • Promoting Global Health - Connecting and empowering individuals and communities to take charge over their own health and well-being

  • Advancing Entrepreneurship, Trade & Economic Opportunity- Find new ways to advance entrepreneurship, job creation, and economic opportunity

  • Fostering Science, Technology & Innovation - Discover new ways to support societies and build capacity by leveraging science and technology

Each topic area will have recognized leaders in the related field of interest facilitating the conversations.
