In June 2010, I launched a new section on my web site designed for those who are not volunteer managers and are not professional nonprofit staff -- rather, these new pages are for individuals, particularly young people, who want to do some good, or need community service hours, or want to fund a volunteering trip abroad, but aren't sure where to or how to get started.
There are now even more resources since that launch two months ago. Here's the complete list of resources:
- For those seeking volunteering in order to fulfill a community service obligation from a court or school obligation.
- Detailed information on finding community service and volunteering for teens.
- Detailed advice for volunteer groups / group volunteering.
- Tips on creating or holding a successful fund raising event (small, medium and large events)
- Volunteering with seniors.
- Volunteering to help after major disasters.
- Ideas for funding your volunteering abroad trip.
- Ideas for the Girl Scouts Gold and Silver Awards OR Ideas for Creating Your Own Volunteering Activity. These ideas are good for anyone (not just a Girl Scout) seeking ways to create or lead a sustainable, lasting benefit to a community, to have a leadership role as a volunteer. These are also good mitzvah projects.
- Helping People Address Their Problems with Plastic
How to mobilize a long-term community to clean up plastic bottles, plastic bags and other plastic waste from their environment, and how to reduce a community's use of such items in the future.
The inspiration for these pages came from the community service section of YahooAnswers, where the same questions about volunteering, community service and fund raising events get asked over and over again. That message board has given me a lot of insight into what young people are thinking regarding community service, as well as how they use technology (they are NOT as savvy about tech as the media and various consultants would have you think).
By clicking on any of the ads on these pages, you help me raise funds to maintain my entire web site (web hosting, domain name ownership and, ofcourse, my time). Also, I'm not responsible for the advertising that appears on these pages (ads are Google's decision).
