24-Aug-2007 - Navy Weekender
Navy Weekender
The RNRMCA will be hosting the last event in the South West 2007 TT calendar (with the exception of HC’s) over the weekend of the Sat 15 & Sun 16 Sep 07. The ‘Navy Weekender’ will start off with Saturday’s 16 Mile Sporting TT commencing at 1800 and then followed by Sunday’s 25 Mile TT (that includes some undulating and very fast stretches of Dual Carriageway and A Roads) commencing at 0800. The current 16 Mile course record is held by Alex Fitzgerald (Bikinmotion CC) with a 39 min 53 sec set in 2005. The 25 is new course so a record will be created on the day. Although the weekend includes a 2 Stage TT aggregate prize list, both events are stand alone races which will have a separate prize list for both Seniors, Vets on Std, Ladies/Juniors and Teams, so you don’t have to enter both races.
Sunday’s event also includes the new annual Devon v Cornwall ‘Peninsula Cup’ with the top 10 individual times from each County added together with the lowest county aggregate winning. The 10th place rider of the winning team will keep hold of the trophy for one year. Sunday presentation will also feature the main awards for the SWBAR season, so please come along and show your support to those deserving winners.
The HQ will be at HMS RALEIGH, Torpoint, (just across the water from Plymouth) which has excellent changing, showering and presentation facilities. The prize list for Individuals, Vets and Teams is fairly good even if we have to run the event at a loss! I am hoping to attract between 60-100 riders for both days. The scenery is beautiful and the people friendly, so why not make a weekend of it and come along. I have booked glorious sunshine for the weekend.
Please see handbook for further details or send your CTT Entry Forms to:

I look forward to receiving your entries.

12-Jun-2007 - Plymouth Aquathlon 2007 – Review Report
Following a number of e-mails and phone conversations querying the delivery of the Plymouth Aquathlon, a meeting was held on 9th June to review the event. The following conclusions were draw from this meeting:
- Volunteers - Plymouth Tri Club (PTC) were short of what they deemed the desired number of volunteers for the event, and therefore left themselves stretched throughout the event. This was down to volunteers having already attended the Kids of Steel event four weeks earlier, and also committing to attend the Adult Triathlon taking place in three weeks. Conclusion – more time must be had between events to ensure volunteers are willing and able to commit to supporting races.
- Race Number – Numbering of athletes with a marker pen was inadequate as several athletes numbers smudged or wiped off. This made the time keepers role very difficult in some cases. Conclusion – Numbers will be provided for all future events.
- Running without top – A limited number of athletes ran the race without tops. The volunteer in transition was not from a triathlon background, and was unaware of this rule. Conclusion – An in-depth race brief for marshals must take place before events. Race referee would be better positioned in/around transition.
- Referee visible – Race referee did not wear high visibility vest, as he was on poolside. Conclusion – Race referees must be highly visible to all competitors, spectators and volunteers, and wear appropriate clothing.
- Parents in Transition – A limited number of parents entered transition to assist their child. This situation stemmed from the Kids of Steel event, where parents had been able to assist athletes. This event was the first competitive event for many athletes. Conclusion – Stricter marshalling around transition.
- Number of laps run – It has become apparent that a very limited number of athletes may not have completed the appropriate number of laps for their event. – Conclusion – A simple system of using bands, handing them out for each lap run.
- Parent Code of Conduct – Parents behaviour as whole was very good, let down by one or two. Volunteers and parents were unaware of the appropriate appeals procedure for the event. Conclusion – Display the Parent Code of Conduct, Appeals Procedure and other relevant documents at registration. Make all volunteers aware of these documents.
- Race Results – After in-depth review of the events results PTC conclude that the results for the event stand. PTC concluded that a very limited number of athletes may not have completed the appropriate number of laps, leading to confusion in positioning.
- Appeal - Athlete Number One - With some numbers rubbing off athletes arms/legs, it may have been the case that athlete number 1 and athlete number 10 finishing line times were mixed up. Having scrutinised the results PTC concluded that it was not possible to say whether this was the case or not. If this had been the case athlete number 1 would have run an exceptionally fast run split, or completed incorrect laps. PTC has no evidence to prove either case.
It could also be the case that athlete number 10 was a lap ahead of athlete number 1 due to athlete number 10 swimming a considerably faster swim split. This may have lead to the misconception by spectators that athlete number 1 was ahead of athlete number 10 when athlete number 1 passed athlete number 10. Athlete number 1 would have had to pass athlete number 10 twice to be ahead of them if athlete number 1 had been a lap behind athlete number 10. PTC has no conclusive evidence of this.
Conclusion – PTC conclude that the race results will stand. Triathlon England South West will be provided with this report and the appeal form from athlete number 1. It will be for them to decide whether or not the results should be considered for the South West Series. PTC recommends that they are.

4-May-2007 - Plympton ‘Corus’ Kids of Steel triathlon weekend deemed to be a major success
The Plympton Corus Kids of Steel weekend, which took place at Ridgeway School and Plympton Pool on 28th and 29th April, proved a major success. Over 220 children, aged between 8 and 16 years old, participated in the two days of triathlon activity.
The success of the event was put down to the strong partnership working between Ridgeway School Physical Education Department and Plymouth Triathlon Club, and precision planning by the British Triathlon Federation team of event organisers.
Many of the youngsters attending the weekend had never participated in a triathlon before, and the combination of swimming, cycling and running proved a fun and challenging experience for the athletes.
Following on from the success of the weekend, Plymouth Junior Triathlon Club training session are now based at Ridgeway School and cost only £1 to members of the club, or £2 to non-members. The sessions will include coaching and instruction on the bike, run and transition disciplines. Swim sessions will be planned for latter in the year. This fun club is for all abilities, including complete new-comers to the sport. All you need to bring is sports kit, trainers, a drink, a bike and a helmet (we have a number of bikes and helmets that can be borrowed, if you don’t have one). The next club sessions are on:
SATURDAY 26TH MAY
SATURDAY 9TH JUNE
SATURDAY 7TH JULY
ALL SESSIONS ARE BASED AT RIDGEWAY SCHOOL, 9am - 10.30am
The next multi-discipline event taking place in Plympton is the Plymouth Aquathlon. This is a swim/run event for 8 to 16 year olds, based at Plympton Pool. The distances of the event vary for different age groups, starting with 50m swim/600m run for 8 year olds, leading up to 400m swim/5km run for 15 and 16 year olds. The swim is in the heated Plympton Pool and the run on the grass around Harewood Park. Cost of entry for the event if £10.
Please contact Ray Haines (PTC Junior Club Co-ordinator) for more details about the club and event rayhaines@blueyonder.co.uk
Julian Wills, Triathlon England National Equity Manager and Plymouth Triathlon Club Senior Coach said “I am delighted with the success of the event. We have had tremendous support from Ridgeway School Physical Education Department and the team at Plympton Pool. I really believe this could act as a springboard for developing triathlon opportunities for local children, and who knows, we may discover the 2012 Olympic Triathlon Champion.”

19-Oct-2006 - Four Trophies for PTC Members at Wadebridge
The annual Wadebridge triathlon is always
well supported, where mainly local clubs battle it out for the top positions in
age categories. The increase in numbers entering over the years has also
brought a higher level of competition. In some categories this means new faces
for the trophy positions.
On October 8th this was the
situation for Plymouth Triathlon Club member Carolyn Cleland. This was her first triathlon event and
claimed a trophy for second position in the female category, just two minutes
behind first female.
Crossing the finishing line with the same
time was Carla Haines also claiming a trophy for equal second place in the
female and a first position for the under sixteen year old categories.
Next in line for the vets was Ray Haines
claiming a trophy for second place in the male vet 50’s category.
A great day for Plymouth Triathlon Club.
