5-Jul-2006 - Plymouth Tri Club Standard Distance Triathlon 2nd July 2006
Review: Plymouth Olympic Distance Triathlon 2006 The first ever Olympic Standard Distance Triathlon in Plymouth took place on 2nd July, hosted by the Plymouth Triathlon Club. The course ahead would offer plenty of challenges for all triathletes. A field of 100 competitors took part ranging from complete novices to GB Internationals. A very close race saw David Bailey edge out the win by 14 seconds from Nathen Jolly.
The day started with torrential down pours and thunder storms - this didn't deter the athletes or marshalls from the competition. Luckily by the end of registration, the rain had stopped and the sun was deperately trying to break through.
By the start of the event, the weather had improved slightly. The roads were drying up and smiles were appearing on the faces of the competitors. The race brief took place in the transition area, then it was off to the mass swim start.
The swim started in front of the Mount Batten Centre and the swim course took the competitors out via the Mount Batten gangway, out to the end of the promenade and back. The start, in the water just off the slipway, was a sight to behold but nothing compared to the racers beginning to get into their stroke as the passed under the water taxi pontoon. An early leader was apparent after just the first 100 metres or so. First out of the water was David Bailey.
In to the 1st Transition, and off on to the bikes. A very demanding course that saw the competitors weave their way out of Mount Batten and in to the South Hams. The course took the riders out toward the Fleet estate and then turn on to undulating but relatively fast roads and the return leg was via Spriddlestone. The riders were still to face the most technical part of the bike course – the Jennycliff descent! A special mention to Scott M from MBH as he scored his second wipeout in just two triathlons to date. First rider back was Nathen Jolly.
In to the 2nd Transition and off on the run. Those who looked at the race pack would have known what was coming. The run leg was a horror for anyone used to a fast, flat triathlon 3rd discipline. The course for the run took the competitors on a very undulating and demanding route that included "Murder Hill" and the coastal path around Bovisand. The race ended on a wonderful downhill through Jennycliff with fabulous views of Plymouth Sound and glimpses of the much anticipated finish line at Mountbatten.
The finish to the race reached a highlight as David Bailey had Nathen Jolly in his sights in the last few hundred metres. David caught and passed Nathen with around 300m to go to take victory in a time of 2 hours and 4 minutes. Nathen crossed the line in 2 hours 4 minutes and 14 seconds. 3rd place went to Carl Harwood of Mounts Bay Harriers in 2 hours 7 minutes 48 seconds.
Overall the day was a complete success, with this event joining a list of triathlons in the South West that are rapidly becoming legendary on the National Triathlon scene. Full results, images of the event and entry forms for next year are available on www.plymouthtriclub.co.uk.
